Taking good care of your teeth is important for many reasons. Healthy teeth and gums not only make your smile much more appealing but also help to prevent painful oral diseases like tooth decay and gum disease.
There’s no short-term solution however and maintaining good dental health requires consistent effort and attention to prevent any complications. Here are four essential tips to put into practice that will ensure your teeth are well taken care of.
Brush correctly
You’ll likely know already that it’s important to brush your teeth twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, but the way you brush is just – if not more – important.
Take time to ensure you reach all surfaces of your teeth, including the front, back, and sides. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and move it in circular motions to remove any plaque, and this should be done for at least two minutes.
Electric toothbrushes are a popular choice as they often have built-in timers and can help to improve brushing technique. While there’s some disagreement as to how frequently toothbrushes should be replaced, it’s worth replacing every 2-3 months so that you can get the most out of brushing.
Floss regularly
Yes, it’s another step in your daily routine. But flossing is equally as important as brushing for removing food and plaque from between your teeth. It can also help in lowering gum inflammation. You should look to floss at least once a day, or after each meal, gently working the floss between each tooth with 8-10 strokes.
If you find flossing difficult for whatever reason, consider using a water flosser. These devices use a stream of water to clean between teeth and along the gumline and are particularly useful if you have braces or other dental equipment that make traditional flossing challenging.
Reduce your sugar intake
It’s no surprise that a diet high in sugary foods and drinks can contribute to tooth decay. Make sure to reduce your intake of fat and sugar, including chocolate, fizzy drinks, sweets, etc. Instead eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and proteins that contribute to a balanced, healthy diet.
This doesn’t mean you can’t have the occasional treat though. If you do consume unhealthy foods, rinse your mouth with water afterwards to help remove any of the remains.
Have consistent dental check-ups
No one enjoys a visit to the dentist, but regular check-ups and cleanings are crucial. Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums for things like decay and gum disease, which can become a problem if not treated early.
Generally, you should go for a check-up and cleaning every six months. However, if you have a higher risk of problems, such as due to diabetes or certain medications, you may need more regular inspections.
