A Little Luxury For Me

Your Winter Driving Safety Checklist

December 19, 2025 by Erica Hughes Leave a Comment

During winter, public roads in the UK are measurably less safe than they are during summer. As such, it’s vital that drivers prepare themselves, and their vehicles, for the challenges ahead.

So, what does effective preparation look like? Let’s look at the safety concerns that might have, and how they might be addressed.

Why Winter Driving Requires Extra Preparation

During winter, the roads are more likely to be wet with rainwater. In many cases, they might be icy, too. The salt that local councils dispense in order to address the danger that ensues might also come with its own corrosive consequences for the underside of your vehicle. Then, there’s the danger posed by poor visibility at night-time, and, during the festive period, the increased likelihood that other road users might have had a drink.

Essential Checks Before You Start the Engine

Before setting out in the morning, you’ll want to ensure that your tyres are in good shape, and that all of your lights are working. It’s also a good idea to check beneath the car, to ensure that no small animals have taken shelter there.

What to Pack in Your Winter Emergency Kit

Every car should be packed with a special kit, which will allow you to cope with being stranded at the side of the road. It should include some food, blankets, jumper cables, a first-aid kit, a torch, and a warning triangle – along with whatever other items you think necessary.

How to Drive Safely on Ice, Snow and Wet Roads

When the road surface is less than ideal, you’ll want to reduce your speed. You’ll also need to understand how to steer out of a slide. Tap the brakes and steer in the direction that the rear of the car is sliding.

Smart Habits for Winter Visibility and Night Driving

If you know that you’re going to be doing a lot of driving at night, then you’ll want to be able to make good use of your full beams – without dazzling oncoming drivers. Take the time to entirely defrost the inside and outside of your car before setting out, and make sure that your screenwash is replenished (and that you have a reasonable supply of it in your car).

What to Do If You’re Involved in a Winter Road Accident

If, despite all of your precautions, you’re involved in a road accident, then you’ll need to take a few key steps. Make sure that you get yourself to safety, and that you get medical attention for any injuries you’ve suffered. You’ll also want to get in touch with a lawyer with particular experience in dealing with accident claims. With their guidance, you’ll often be able to go through the legal process without attending court in person at all.
