Baylis and Harding Autumn Winter 2013

November 7, 2013 by Erica Hughes 5 Comments

Baylis and Harding Autumn Winter 2013 BeauticologyI’m a bit of a fan of Baylis and Harding with their high quality, but thoroughly affordable toiletries.  Last year I visited their head office and this year I’ve been sampling the Baylis and Harding Autumn Winter 2013 range.

Royale Bouquet Lemon Blossom and White Rose has been just the thing to get me started each morning with its fresh, citrus notes. It’s a lovely combination to have the combination of the lime, yuzu and orange with the floral scents of jasmine and white rose.  I like the fact too that you can use a whole suite of products with the same scent, so you can layer your fragrance.

Have you come across Baylis and Harding’s Beauticology brand yet? They have some fabulous new variants for Christmas 2013.  I’ve found the Beauticology Chocolatier the ultimate indulgence and we all love a little chocolate at Christmas don’t we?  But, the Beauticology Candy Cane range runs it a close second with its fun fragrances like lemon drops and cherry and apple.  Within the Beauticology brand you’ll find sets that are great for stocking fillers, as well as reasonably priced larger sets, so there’s something for every price band.  There’s a top of the range £40 set featuring a weekend bag filled with Beauticology goodies, which I’ve got my eye on for my Christmas list.

Tesco Finest Produce

November 6, 2013 by Erica Hughes 1 Comment

San Marzano and Piccolo Tomatoes from Tesco Finest ProduceTesco Finest have recently had a relaunch and I’ve been trying out some of the new products available on the Produce section.  What I like about the Tesco Finest Produce range is that they showcase more unusual (and often more flavoursome) varieties of fruits and vegetables.  At the moment I’m eating a lot of tomatoes and I hate insipid tomatoes.  So the Tesco Finest San Marzano on the vine and the Finest Piccolo Tomatoes have been going down a storm with me.  I eat a small bowl of salad every lunchtime and the quality of these shines through.  Each biteful is a tasty treat and I’m finding that my salads have suddenly got tomato heavy, I wonder why?

Thai style stir fry and oriental saucesEvery week we try to eat vegetarian at least once or twice.  We figure it’s better for us and better for the environment too.  It can be difficult to come up with new inspiration though and we probably don’t have enough vegetarian dishes in our repertoire.  Tesco Finest have a number of prepared products that can help you create a healthy, nutritious meal with the minimum of fuss and effort.

Tesco Finest Stir FryFirst up we tried the Tesco Finest Stir Frys.  I used a pack of the Thai Style Stir Fry with Oriental Sauce for me and my son.  This was a coconut based, delicately spiced and very tasty sauce.  It went down well with my adventurous six-year-old and I enjoyed it too.  My husband likes stronger tastes so he tried out a Thai Style chilli sauce. He loved the sauce too, which was full of flavour without simply being overloaded with chillis.  However, the Thai Style Stir Fry did contain a few surprises.  As is normally the case with these packs, the vegetable are cut up and are ready to go straight into your wok.  In amongst the other vegetables were some small, whole chillies.  A mouthful of one of those and your taste buds are ruined for the rest of the meal.  I was a bit surprised that they weren’t cut up because they were too strong to eat in one go.

stuffed mushroomsFeeling very virtuous about managing a second vegetarian evening meal in a row, we tried the Tesco Finest Stuffed Forestiere Mushrooms. These large, flat mushrooms have a strong, almost meaty taste and texture.  They’re filled with a combination of caramelized red onion, smoked garlic and creamy soft cheese.  On top of this comes a crunchy, ciabatta crumb which is made using a 24 month-aged parmigiano reggiano cheese.  They were packed with taste and made for a quick and easy meal as they just need to go into the oven to cook.

Fox’s Biscuits ‘Born In The USA’

November 5, 2013 by Erica Hughes 4 Comments

Born in the USA Fox's BiscuitsYou know how the US seem to have so many great desserts?  I’m thinking Key Lime Pie and Blueberry Muffins. I’m dreaming of Mississippi Mud Pie and Cherry Cheesecake.  Fox’s biscuits have some great new flavours that combine those American desserts and puddings with some of Fox’s own most popular biscuits.

In our house the Blueberry Muffin Party Rings were a big hit with younger family members and visitors.  The richness of the Mississippi Mud Pie Melts was great with a big mug of tea and coffee.  For mid morning elevensies, the Key Lime Pie Crunch Creams woke me up with a bit of zing.  My absolute favourite though were the Cherry Cheesecake Jam ‘n’ Cream biscuits – simply awesome.

These stateside biscuits are only available for a limited period of time, so stock up quick.

Exploring Brittany: Vannes

marina at Vannes

Marina at Vannes

Vannes is an attractive town with a history stretching back over 200 years.  There’s lots to see there too with its medieval centre being especially interesting.  The more modern bits are appealing too especially its lovely marina.  We parked up near to the marina which is a lovely place to promenade along.  It’s also where the tourist office is located so it’s a convenient starting point.  If you want to linger there are a number of cafes, with outdoor seating, with good views of the marina, so you can sit and admire the view for a while.

Medieval Vannes

Much of Vannes’ appeal is in meandering around its charming, medieval streets with their timber-framed buildings.  Scattered between the medieval houses, there are buildings from different periods as the town developed and changed over the years.  It’s a pretty town to walk around and as you can see from this picture, this area is largely pedestrianised which makes it a safer experience.

Tour du Connetable

Around the edges of the old town are the town walls.  They don’t fully surround the medieval heart of Vannes, but they run pretty much continuously up the eastern edge.  There are a number of towers like this one, plus there are opportunities to climb up onto the walls and admire the view.  There are good views to be had over the Jardins des Remparts in particular, with the Jardins de la Garenne in the background.

Bilboquet Toy Shop

For me a trip to a new town isn’t complete without sampling the local shops.  There were so many lovely food shops and cafes to choose from that it’s difficult to just pick one out.  However, even if you don’t have children, the toy shop (Bilboquet) is an irresistible draw with its bubble blowing teddy bear outside and wonderfully intricate window displays.  There are lovely toys inside of the wooden, inventive variety so it’s a great place to do a little Christmas or birthday shopping.

A chocolate crepe

An account of a visit to a French town would be incomplete without a description of lunch.  Eateries tend to be a bit pricey in the old town, but thanks to our guide-book we found a reasonably priced one with a fixed lunchtime menu.  It was the Crêperie-La-Cave–St-Gwenaël on the street of the same name, near the cathedral.  We had a ham and egg galette, followed by chocolate crepes – perfect!

Me Time With Bahlsen Biscuits

October 24, 2013 by Erica Hughes 4 Comments

Parcel From BahlsenThe other week a mysterious parcel arrived.  When a box looks this good, you can’t wait to open it believe me.  Inside I found a box full of goodies from Bahlsen Biscuits.  The idea was to give busy mums valuable ‘me time’.  Inside the box was pretty well all you need to have a relaxing half hour or more.

For me relaxing is all about a cup of tea.  Bahlsen have thought of everything here with some specially selected leaf tea and a infuser to go with it, just in case you don’t have a tea pot, tea strainers and all the other paraphernalia.

Me Time With Bahlsen BiscuitsWhat could be better to go with your nice cup of tea than some luxurious biscuits to make yourself feel pampered.  I’m a bit of a Bahlsen Biscuits fan and we often have some in the house.  If they don’t get eaten straight away, they are my biscuit of choice to take round to a friend’s house when I’ve been invited around for a cuppa.  They always go down very well.  My favourite Bahlsen biscuit is the Choco Leibniz Dark Chocolate with its thick coating of high quality dark chocolate.
The pampering didn’t stop there with a pashmina to wrap round me to keep me toasty warm and a good magazine to read.  To keep out those unwanted interruptions there was even a sign to put on the door ‘ Me-Time In Progress’.

Ozeri Double Wall Thermo Glasses Review

October 19, 2013 by Erica Hughes 1 Comment

Ozeri Double Wall Thermo GlassesWhen I lived in Switzerland I used to regularly have hot rosehip tea served in a glass.  It always looked so pretty and appealing, so when I received these Ozeri Double Wall Thermo Glasses for review, that was first on my list of things to try them with.  Here’s my first rosehip tea in a glass that I’ve ever had back home here in Britain and very nice it was too.

The Ozeri Double Wall Thermo Glasses come as a set of four and the glasses are heat and shatter resistant and each holds 8 oz.  They are strong and lightweight and are very easy to hold, thanks to the two opposing mouth-blown dimples that are perfectly placed for your fingers to grip. The double wall design that suspends drinks within an inner wall.  It also keeps your hands cool with hot drinks and you don’t get condensation with chilled drinks either.

I’d say they aren’t just for drinks as I have plans to use mine to hold some Eton Mess.  They have a simple, elegant design that wouldn’t be out of place at a dinner party.  You can pop them in the dishwasher afterwards too.

Update 2026:  I am still using these regularly and they still look great.

Chobani Meets Fine Dining

October 18, 2013 by Erica Hughes 4 Comments

Chobani Meets Fine DiningThis week I was pleased to accepts Chobani‘s kind invitation for dinner.  Now I’d not heard of Chobani before and I must admit that I was intrigued as to how they were going to incorporate yoghurt into a meal being cooked and presented at a top restaurant.  So I went to Edmunds Restaurant, Brindley Place, Birmingham keen to see how Chobani Meets Fine Dining was going to work in practice.

It was lovely to be greeted so warmly by the Chobani crew and this was backed up by the flawless service provided by the Maitre D’ that I’d last seen at presiding over the dining room of a nearby Michelin starred establishment.  Having a cocktail pressed into your hand is a great way to start the evening and this (like the rest of the meal) features Chobani yoghurt.

Chobani Yoghurt on the MenuAs you’d expect in a fine dining establishment of Edmunds’ calibre (which is very high – I’d eaten there before), the table was a sight to behold in its own right.  The menu took my eye as everything on it involved Chobani yoghurt.  For each course there were two or three choices, so providing a comprehensive range of dishes cooked using Chobani.  On top of this during the meal we were treated to some amuse bouches which also featured the yoghurt product.

Between courses we learned the story of Chobani, how it was set up in America in a former Kraft factory and within 5 years it was an enormous business.  Becoming successful so quickly is usually down to having a top quality product and Chobani is no exception.  They take fresh milk and add a special recipe of yoghurt cultures. The yoghurt is then authentically strained and real fruit is added. The result is thick, creamy yoghurt that is packed with protein (twice that of normal yoghurt).  Almost all their products are fat-free too.

Roasted Breast of Palombe Pigeon

Chobani can also be used as a cooking ingredient as a substitute for cream, oil, butter, cream cheese and more.  Many of the dishes we were treated to during the evening used the yoghurt in this way.  Others made use of the fruit yoghurts.

This was my first course of Roasted Breast of Palombe Pigeon. Now I do like pigeon with its gamey taste, in fact this was my second helping of pigeon of the week.  It was really flavoursome (although I did have a little trouble cutting mine) and beetroot is a natural pairing.  The blueberry Chobani dressing provided an extra harmonious note.  Doesn’t it look pretty too?

Main course for me came in the shape of a Fillet of Beef with Lemon Chobani Marinated Herb Potatoes and Chobani Mushroom Sauce.  The fillet was wonderful tender and perfectly cooked to my specification.  The creaminess of the Chobani was the perfect complement to the meat and combined so well with the lemon and mushroomy flavours.

Raspberry Souffle with Yoghurt at Edmunds Restaurant

Chobani Raspberry Souffle

I can never resist a souffle for dessert, can you?  This Chobani Raspberry Souffle came risen and light.  At the table, it was cut and yoghurt was added to add its creaminess to the souffle texture.

Chobani really surprised me with its versatility.  Using yoghurt for cooking is likely to become a much more integral part of my cooking at home.  I really like the sound of using Chobani instead of oil or mayonnaise especially as it is fat free, but it tastes so creamy, you’d never suspect it.

Bank Restaurant Birmingham

Smoked Salmon at Bank Restaurant Birmingham

Smoked Salmon

The other weekend we went to Bank in Birmingham for a celebration meal for my father-in-law’s 70th birthday.  We were a party of nine people including one 6-year-old.  Between us we sampled quite a range off the menu, but I’ll mostly talk about what I tried myself.

oysters at bank restaurant birmingham

Oysters

I started with the smoked salmon which is always a favourite of mine.  It was a high quality smoked salmon with a subtly complementary honey, mustard and dill dressing.  The Oysters that some of the party had looked fantastic as did the Beef Carpaccio that my husband tried.

Native Lobster

Lobster

Both my husband and I had the Native Lobster. We both had a really stand out Lobster Thermidor, some years ago, at The Marcliffe Hotel in Aberdeen and I think we were hoping that this dish would measure up to it.  Sadly it didn’t, we were both underwhelmed.  The portion seemed a bit stingy for the price and the dish failed to make the best of the natural flavours of its main ingredient.  We may have been a bit unlucky as other dishes round the table seemed to meet with approval.

child's fish and chipsMy son at 6 is quite the little gourmet and he loves visiting restaurants.  Fish and chips is a favourite of his and he was very happy to find it on the menu.  Incidentally, there isn’t a printed children’s menu, but the waiting staff can tell you what is available.  He liked it very much and enjoyed his generous portion of fish.  I think though there could have been a few more chips on the plate.  We didn’t get offered any children’s entertainment like activity sheets or coloured pencils, so make sure you bring something with you if you have children in your party.

warm chocolate brownie

Brownie

For dessert I had a Warm Chocolate Brownie.  The brownie was ultra rich with a dense, chocolatey flavour and a generous amount of nuts running through. It was a very satisfying dessert and finished the meal on a high for me.

We found the service to be good, but relaxed.  Possibly a touch too relaxed at times as it was a little while before we were taken to our table.  We didn’t feel rushed or pressured though and the meal went very smoothly indeed.  It’s nice that Bank have some larger, round tables which were perfect for our gathering.  Bank has a lovely location in Brindley Place, just on the edge of the canal so there are good views from the main dining room and the outdoor terrace (with comfy seats).

Asda NSPA Range

October 9, 2013 by Erica Hughes 1 Comment

asda nspa rangeOver the last few weeks I’ve been trying out some products from Asda’s nspa range.  Asda’s exclusive nspa products are the result of years of experience at the Nirvana Spa.  It seemed like a great idea to me: to bring that spa experience to good value products.

There are three different fragrance offerings in the range: Orient, Bloom and Pure, so there should be one to suit most people. I opted to try out the Pure scent.  It comes packaged in a simple, elegant, slimline bottle.  It’s described as ‘beach breezes, lush lilies and aquatic auras – with sophisticated tones of Lotus Flower, White Freesia and Jasmine, this fragrance is infused with essential oil of Sandalwood for a clean and uplifting aroma.’ Now I’m no fragrance expert, but it certainly has a clean, fresh scent with a light floral element.  It’s perfect as a daytime fragrance, but it could be used in the evening too.

I’ve also been trying out a couple of nspa’s moisturisers from the Beauty Rituals range.  Both the Beauty Balm and the Brightening Day Cream have a SPF of 15.  I’ve been very impressed.  They both feel very light on the skin, but are not lightweight in their effects.

The Beauty Balm is formulated to ‘minimise the appearance of fine lines and blemishes with light, natural colour for beautiful, dewy skin’. It’s essentially a tinted moisturiser with anti-ageing moisturisers.  I like to wear tinted moisturiser in the summer, but it’s nice to have one that is designed to work hard for my skin too.

The Brightening Day Cream is a year round daily moisturiser.  I’d be happy to use this on a long-term basis.  It does everything I expect of more expensive moisturisers without the high price tag.

M Kitchen On Tour

October 8, 2013 by Erica Hughes 1 Comment

Last week I was invited to go along to M Kitchen’s Cookery Bus which was in Birmingham for a couple of days.  M Kitchen, Morrisons range of convenience foods, has had a revamp and they were out on the road to bring their new dishes to a new audience.

Over recent months Neil Nugent, Morrisons executive chef of product development, and his team have been working to create new dishes for the M Kitchen range. The M Kitchen range was launched two years ago and includes over 450 product lines.

The new dishes the M Kitchen was serving up for the good folk of Birmingham to try came from these ranges:

  • Tex Mex
  • Italian
  • Tastes of Home – British classics
  • Takeaway – Chinese and Indian

While I was there I tried out the Chicken Korma from the Takeaway range and the Lamb Ragu with Tagliatelle from the Italian range.

M Kitchen Chicken Korma

Chicken Korma

The Chicken Korma was a really stand out dish. I loved the fact that you could clearly pick out what some of the star ingredients were like the rose petals and the slivers of fresh coconut. It was created for Morrisons by Atul Kochhar.  Atul Kochhar has a collection of Indian restaurants including Benares in Mayfair which has a Michelin star.  Atul Kochhar’s dishes can be summed up as modern Indian cuisine with a contemporary British twist.  The Chicken Korma lived up to this.  It was a good-looking, attractive dish with a creamy, flavoursome sauce.  If you’re a korma fan it’s well worth trying this one.

M Kitchen Lamb Ragu

Lamb Ragu

I also tried out M Kitchen’s Lamb Ragu with Tagliatelle.  This was a tasty ragu sauce with a depth of flavour.  The tomato and red wine sauce pulls the dish together and coats the tagliatelle well.  I enjoyed this dish, but it didn’t grab me in quite the same was as the chicken korma.

Whilst I was there I met Richard, one of the M Kitchen’s chefs.  His enthusiasm for his job (developing new dishes for the range) and the concepts behind the range shone through.  He talked about how the dishes are made in small batches rather than enormous vats to maintain that home cooked taste.

Morrisons cookery demonstrationRichard also gave a cookery demonstration with some useful tips, like how to cut up onions and other vegetables.  I learnt a little about Italian cookery principles too.  He made a ragu like the one we tried.

I got to take some dishes home with us and my husband tried out the Slow Cooked Beef with Gravy which came with a generous portion of gravy.  I got to sample the Spicy Enchiladas which were very tasty indeed.  Like all ready meals they tend to have fairly small portion sizes, but when they taste good and cost less than a takeaway, you can mix and match from the range to find an easy meal to suit.  I think the range is perfect for that Friday night feeling a bit lazy and wanting an end of week treat sort of mood.

It’s not too late to catch the M Kitchen roadshow in Glasgow at St.Enoch’s Square on 25th and 26th October.
