A Little Luxury For Me

Converting Your Garden to a Healing Oasis

May 17, 2024 by Erica Hughes Leave a Comment

If you’re fortunate enough to have a garden, then you might use it in a variety of ways. It can function as an outdoor workshop, a gym, and an entertainment center, depending on the time of week, and the inclinations of the owner.

Perhaps the most popular and important use of a garden, however, is as an outdoor space for rest and recuperation. Human beings are adapted to find green space relaxing. But, to truly turn your garden into a healing oasis, you’ll want to consider a few essential tweaks. Let’s take a look at a few essential ones.

Tranquil Elements

Tranquillity tends to be associated with natural elements. Rocks, untouched timber, and flowing, organic shapes can all play a role. Flowing water can also be extremely powerful, even if there’s just a little bit of it.

Our minds have adapted over millions of years to find flowing water soothing – since, in nature, that’s where the food tends to be. Provide the sight and sound of water flowing, and you’ll provide relief for your brain.

Of course, one element that can’t be overlooked here is lighting, which is critical if you’re going to be using the space late in the evening. String a few festoon lights on an available section of wall, or below a canopy, and the effect can be dramatic.

Sensory Designs

In the garden space, it’s natural to focus on what’s visually appealing. But there are other senses to consider, too. Textures, smells, and sounds can all contribute to a winning wellness hub.

Kew recommends dividing a ‘sensory’ garden into distinct zones, each of which might focus on a particular sense. So, you might install wind chimes and water features in the auditory zone, and outdoor artworks and sculptures in the visual zone.

Plant Selection

When it comes to smells, of course, it’s flowers that will make the biggest contribution. Install the right kind of flowers, and you’ll enjoy scents with particular therapeutic benefits. For example, lavender is said to help deal with insomnia and anxiety, while rosemary is linked with improved mood and lowered cortisol levels.

On top of these benefits, a varied selection of flowers will help to draw wildlife to your garden. This can help you to deal with pests.

Space for Activities

Your garden should also provide you with the physical space you need to pursue your favourite activities.

This might mean spreading a yoga mat across an expanse of patio, or installing a hanging egg chair so that you can catch up on your favourite book. If you want the ultimate in luxury, and if your budget allows for it, you might also install an outdoor hot tub to perfect your oasis.
