May 13, 2025 by Erica Hughes Leave a Comment

If someone you love is going through a hard time, it can be difficult for you to sit back and watch them not being their usual happy self. It might be because they’ve suffered a loss of someone close to them, perhaps they’ve recently been let go of work, or maybe they’re just not feeling themselves. No matter what the reason is, it’s never nice to know your friend is suffering and you’ll want to do something to help them out. In this article we take a look at some top tips to help cheer up a friend going through a hard time that will ensure they know you’re there for them.

Send them a surprise in the post

When trying to cheer up a friend who is going through a hard time, one thing you can do is send something through the post. This is a particularly good idea if you live far away or can’t get around to see them and make sure they know you’re thinking of them. There are many different types of letterbox gifts you can get, including flowers which you can get delivered through the letterbox, special pamper parcels, or chocolate brownies. All you need for this is the address of the recipient and knowledge of something that will make them smile! Check out the delivery times and see if you can get gifts that will arrive promptly. You could look on sites such as Etsy and Pinterest that can also give you ideas of things you can have delivered directly to them.

Plan a day out with them

If your friend is feeling down, one good thing you can do is to distract them with a day out. Sometimes the best thing is to be removed from a scenario and by planning a day out, you’re doing exactly that! There are many types of days out you can get for you both to indulge in together, from heading to the shops and out for lunch, to a pre-booked activity such as a wine tasting event, a night in a spa hotel, or going to watch a concert or to the cinema. There are so many day out ideas you can choose between and your friend is sure to appreciate the time out of the house and away from whatever might be making them sad. The change of scenery and a bit of normalcy can really help them to feel better than they have been.

Check in with them regularly

Sometimes just knowing that you have someone there for you can be enough during a hard time, so checking in with your friend regularly can really help them with this. You should aim to check in with a message or call every day if you can and even if you don’t expect them to answer, know that they will appreciate the gesture. You could send something as simple as a love heart in a message, or an ‘I’m thinking of you’ text and they will feel appreciated, looked after and know that you’re there for them to talk to when they are ready.

Encourage seeking professional help

Sometimes your friend might be going through something that is more than they know how to handle and you don’t know how to give the proper advice either. While your shoulder to cry on and ear for listening might be useful, sometimes they need something deeper to help them get to the root of their issues. In this case, encourage them to seek professional help from someone who can help them to identify what is causing the issues, or help them through something such as a trauma they have experienced. You can offer to go with them, drive them to appointments, or just be there if they need to vent after they have been.

Be there if they need to talk

Sometimes your friend might want to open up and it’s important you’re there for them when this happens. It could be they just need you at the other end of the phone, or maybe they want to meet up for a coffee and talk through what they’re experiencing. No matter what it is, just providing your ear for listening can be a real help.

Think of a thoughtful gift

There are many thoughtful gifts you can get for a friend to help cheer them up and show you care. We’ve touched on letterbox gifts above, but there are many other things you can get that perhaps aren’t so size restricted! You could make a hamper of all of their favourite things, or send them a bottle of fizz and a plant. Think about what they love and are interested in and what you could offer that would make them smile.

Help out with household tasks

When you’re feeling low, sometimes the last thing you want to be doing is your household tasks. As a friend, you could help them with things like bringing round meals for them to heat up and eat, or offering to help with things such as their washing, hoovering or cleaning up their kitchen and bathroom. They might be too proud to ask for help, but the gesture will be appreciated.

These are just a few top tips to help you cheer up a friend going through a hard time. As a friend, it’s important you’re there for them and let them know whatever they need, you’re here to provide. Whether they want some space but to know you’re at the other end of the phone, or if they want you to come and spend time with them, (as long as your schedule allows) you should try and do this. Going through a tough time can be really difficult but knowing you have someone who loves you there for you can make the world of difference. What are some things you’ve done in the past to help cheer up or show you’re there for someone? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear about your ideas and get inspired!m
