Jewellery making is quite a fine craft. No matter what material you’re working with, a lot of time and precision goes into ensuring you get the finish on that necklace, bracelet, or ring that you really want.
You can spend hours on the smallest piece, and if you’re using fibrous material and weaving, stitching, or sewing anything yourself, that project time will easily double!

Try to Place it Out of the Way
When crafting your own jewellery, you don’t want anyone running into your workstation/desk and knocking things over, and you don’t want a cat jumping up and sending your materials flying!
As such, try to place your workspace in a non-central, out of the way location in your home. If possible, convert your garden shed into a work studio and set up a sign on the door that lets others know you’re not to be disturbed!
Keep Eye Strain to a Minimum
No jewellery making space is quite right without some eye protection. Make sure you’re never spending too long with bright lights on the eyes, and that any vision correction you use is in easy reach.
Clear a drawer, make sure your glasses or dailies aquacomfort plus lenses are kept in there 24/7, and don’t sit there with your eyes scrunched and dry the whole time.
You should also keep any magnifying goggles, lenses, or equipment in the same space, so anything you could ever need to keep your eyes relaxed and comfortable can be easily grabbed and used as well.
Get as Large a Station as Possible
Think you can get away with a tiny desk that folds up neatly in the corner of your bedroom? It might work for crafting as and when, but if you’re going to be making your own jewellery in the long term, this is an unrealistic workstation to rely on.
You’re going to need a larger desk and plenty of room around you. After all, your materials and equipment all need to be nearby and properly sorted for ease of access.
If you’re in the midst of trying to attach pieces together and you need to grab something before the glue dries, you can’t be rooting around in boxes for 5+ minutes!
A larger workstation means more surface to work, as well as more space to put the things you need for the project at hand no more than an arm’s length away. Be sure to invest in some little sorter boxes and/or trays so you can bulk up your materials without having them mix into a mess.
