A Little Luxury For Me

How to dress for an awards event

If you’re gearing up for an awards show, you may be wondering what to wear. These events tend to only occur once every so often so you want to make a great impression, especially if you’re among the candidates to receive an award.

Whether it be a corporate event or a prestigious film festival, we take a look at how to dress aptly for the occasion.

Understand the dress code

Each award ceremony will have its own dress code, so it’s important to be aware of this before putting together your outfit. Here’s a look at some of the most common:

Cocktail: These events are less formal, allowing more room for personal style. Women should opt for a cocktail dress just above or below the knee and men should wear a suit, but this doesn’t need to include a jacket or tie.

Formal: Requires men to wear a complete suit with a tie; women should go for longer dresses or gowns.

Black tie: Often the most formal dress code, requiring full-length evening gowns, jumpsuits, and complete tuxedos.

Elevating your style with accessories

When dressing for an awards show, you want your accessories to perfectly complement your outfit without stealing too much attention away. A classic wristwatch is always a solid choice for both men and women. In particular, modern chronographs such as those from Breitling can add a touch of sophistication to your outfit.

Jewellery is also a must for tying together your outfit. Women should consider simple, dazzling stud earrings, a statement necklace, and an elegant gold or silver bracelet. Men may also wish to wear a single gold hoop earrings as well as a tie clip or silver cufflinks.

Another must-have for any woman at an awards event is a small clutch or evening bag, allowing you to keep all your belongings safe, including makeup to refresh your appearance later on in the evening. Another thing to pay attention to, especially for men, is to ensure your shoes match your belt to ensure the look is cohesive.

Seasonal considerations

Depending on the time of year of your event, you may wish to switch up your style, not just for comfort but practicality too. In the spring and summer months, brighter colours and lighter fabrics are the most suitable.

Think pastel-coloured linen suits, floral flowy dresses, and shawl jackets. These are sure to keep you cool and looking your best.

For autumn and winter, pay attention to layers, since these will keep you nice and warm. Heavier wool blends are ideal choices alongside a waistcoat for men. Women should consider opting for a long-sleeve dress but may instead decide to pair a shorter gown with an elegant coat over the top.
