Tips for planning your first ski holiday

August 1, 2024 by Erica Hughes Leave a Comment

Your first ski holiday is an experience filled with excitement and a bit of apprehension. If you’re not sure how to plan your first winter break, here are some of the essential steps to take to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Selecting the right ski resort and accommodation

Choosing the right resort is key. If you’ve never been on a Tignes ski holiday before, look for a resort with a good mix of beginner-friendly slopes and more challenging terrain for when you gain confidence.

Accommodation options range from luxurious chalets to budget-friendly lodges. When choosing your accommodation, think about how close you are to the slopes, your non-negotiable amenities and any handy services like rental shops and shuttle services.

To save money on accommodation, you might want to consider travelling during shoulder season.

Arranging travel

Travel logistics can make or break your trip. Start by booking your flights well in advance. Aim for airports closest to your chosen resort to minimise transfer times.

Many premium resorts offer shuttle services from the airport so you can relax and enjoy the views. If you want more flexibility, it’s a good idea to hire a car instead.

Packing your bags

Packing for a ski holiday requires specialised gear like a waterproof jacket and trousers. You’ll also need to buy plenty of layers so you can keep warm on the slopes.

If it’s your first time skiing, you’ll be relieved to know that skis, poles, boots and a helmet can often be rented at the resort. You should try and pack a few essentials like goggles, gloves and a hat, though!

Additionally, don’t forget to pack casual wear for après-ski activities and comfortable clothing for downtime in your accommodation.

Scheduling lessons

Ski lessons are invaluable for beginners so it’s worth spending a little extra to learn the ropes.

Most resorts offer group and private lessons. Group lessons are cost-effective and a great way to meet other skiers, while private lessons will help you improve faster.

Understanding etiquette and safety rules

So that you don’t upset locals or other holidaymakers, it’s important to understand some basic rules.

As a minimum, always give way to skiers downhill from you, maintain control to stop or avoid obstacles and respect posted signs and closed areas.

Budgeting for additional expenses

Ski holidays can be expensive, so it’s important to budget for all potential costs. These can include lift passes (which vary in price by resort and duration of stay) and equipment rental. You should also budget for meals and drinks on and off the slopes at the same time.

Remember that skiing can be expensive so it’s better to go with a little bit of extra spending money, just in case.

Final thoughts…

With these tips, you’ll be well-prepared for your first ski holiday. Remember to plan, stay safe and have fun on the slopes!

A Guide to Planning a Multi-Destination Honeymoon

July 17, 2024 by Erica Hughes Leave a Comment

Your honeymoon is the ultimate getaway, and a holiday that you will cherish for the rest of your life. It is a symbolic trip, of newfound independence in union – a great oxymoron that represents the betterment of yours and your spouse’s lives as a newly-unified whole. It is also one of the only holidays you can truly justify breaking the bank for!

Planning your honeymoon can often feel like an afterthought, though, especially when you’re giving so much time to planning the ceremony and reception themselves. But you shouldn’t let your honeymoon play second fiddle, especially when it is the opportunity of a lifetime to see some phenomenal places with the love of your life. What follow are some simple instructions to help you not only plan the best honeymoon, but also to make the most of your time by seeing more than one luminary place on your post-marital holiday.

Choosing Your Destinations

Let’s start with the most exciting part: picking out destinations. Not only are you considering the best places you’d like to visit, but also how to get between them. You might be up for a globe-trotting honeymoon adventure, but 14-hour flights are not the pinnacle of romance – especially if you’re only staying a few nights at a time.

As such, you should try to pick destinations relatively close to one another, or within a continent. This way, organising the amount of days you stay at each won’t be as difficult, and contingency plans can be made easily. Mainland Europe is an obvious choice here, if only for the sheer romance of many of its cities – be it Paris, Marseille or Prague.

Booking Your Accommodation and Transportation

You can’t have a multi-destination getaway without properly figuring out transport and accommodation – else you could be stranded in one place, and bed-less in another! There are some fun all-in-one solutions enabling you to kill two birds with one stone; for instance, you could use P&O Cruises to sort both bed and transport, if the cruise lines up with your own destination expectations.

For a more personally-catered travel itinerary, though, you might need to devote some time to pre-booking flights, trains and hotels. If you’re traveling Europe, an interrailing train ticket could be just the ticket for keeping costs low and travel miles high.

Preparing for the Journey

Whatever the shape of your trip, and however you decide to navigate transport and accommodation, your travel preparation will look roughly the same – and should be undertaken in advance of wedding preparation, to avoid you forgetting important documents in the heat of the moment.

Speaking of which, your passport, EHIC/GHIC card and travel insurance documents should be the first things you pack, and should be kept in an easily-accessible pocket of your luggage. Clothes and toiletries are a given, but room for souvenirs and trinkets may not be – so be sure to leave space in your luggage!

How to plan a luxury getaway on a budget

July 17, 2024 by Erica Hughes Leave a Comment

You may believe these getaways are for the rich and that indulging in a lavish holiday will inevitably drain your bank account.

However, this belief overlooks several opportunities to experience them without overspending.

By rethinking your approach with smart planning and clever choices, you can find cheaper ways to enjoy a high-end escape.

  1. Travel during shoulder seasons

If you want to enjoy lavish travel for less, consider booking your trip during the shoulder seasons.

These are the periods just before and after the peak travel times, such as spring and autumn. Destinations shouldn’t be as crowded during these times and you may get better offers on flights and accommodation.

Popular tourist spots for Brits like Italy or Greece are a great example of this. Visiting in May or September means lovely weather without the summer crowds and prices.

  1. Use accommodation hacks

Finding the right place to stay can make a big difference to your budget. Booking a cheap holiday with an affordable provider can get you an excellent hotel for a brilliant price. Arranging your trip early or grabbing last-minute deals can help you get the best rates.

Alternatively, consider glamping to get the mental health benefits of being out in nature as well as superb accommodation for less than a five-star resort may cost.

  1. Choose experience over extravagance

Focus on unique and memorable experiences rather than over-the-top amenities. Activities like dining at top-notch restaurants, taking cultural tours or exploring natural wonders can offer a sense of luxury while being inexpensive.

Think about wine tasting at a vineyard, private guided hikes in beautiful locations or exclusive art gallery tours. These experiences provide a classy feel and leave you with lasting memories.

  1. Savvy transportation choices

Transport costs can add up quickly, but there are ways to keep them down. Organising flights in advance often means lower fares.

Look for budget-friendly alternatives to traditional luxury transport, such as business-class deals or premium economy options. These offer extra comfort without the first-class price tag.

Once you arrive, using public transportation or renting a car can be a cost-effective way to explore your destination.

  1. Choose smart dining options

Tasting the local delicacies is important, but it doesn’t have to be excessively expensive. Some ways to bring costs down include:

  • Research eateries that have great-looking food and low prices.
  • Opt for lunch instead of dinner at high-end restaurants as they’ll sometimes offer similar menus at a fraction of the cost.
  • Take advantage of markets and street food vendors that provide authentic and delicious meals for less.
  • This type of getaway is more achievable than you may think. Try the tips above next time you book for a first-class, yet affordable, time away.
