Mornflake Go! High Protein Porridge

April 18, 2016 by Erica Hughes 9 Comments

Go! High Protein poridgeMornflake sent us some of their Go! High Protein Porridge product to try out.  They offer it in both pots and sachets with either plain or chocolate flavours.  The pots look like just the thing for taking to work to eat or even for using on a camping trip.  You just add hot water and stir – it really is that simple.  The porridge in the sachets can either be prepared on the hob or in the microwave, but it’s all ready to go, so will save you time.

Go! High Protein Porridge is made from Mornflake’s finest rolled oats, skimmed milk and natural non GM soya protein. Mornflake’s High Protein Porridge is made with non GM soya which contains nine essential amino acids in the perfect ratio for maintaining everyday health and is naturally low in saturated fat. That added protein is perfect for anyone with a busy lifestyle or who is exercising regularly.

I love the convenience of the pots and just adding hot water and stirred in the container.  I prefer the plain to the chocolate flavour and in fact, I’m hoping they will bring out some different flavours as the chocolate is a little much for me, but I do like a bit more flavour than plain porridge. That said it’s easy to add a little fruit or some honey to add a little more interest.

Friction Free Shaving

April 11, 2016 by Erica Hughes 11 Comments

lemon juice in cocktailFriction Free Shaving got in touch recently to ask me attend a cocktail making session at Bar Opus in Birmingham. It was a lot of fun, but the serious side was to find out a bit more about Friction Free Shaving.  They are a young company that are essentially offering a razor subscription service aimed at women.  There are other razor subscription services out there, but they are aimed at men, which seems a little daft as women often shave as frequently as men and usually cover a larger surface area when they do so.

The idea is that women can now use a quality razor made of metal, rather than the usual plastic, and change the blade once a week.  Changing the blade frequently means that it’s always nice and sharp, which gives a better finish.  It also makes a lot of sense from a hygiene perspective. Your new blades will arrive regularly through the post in a box that fits through your letter box, so no worries about getting things redelivered or having to pick them up.  This way you’ll always have a new blade available when you need it for a big night out or a holiday.

cocktail gin limoncelloPackages are available for as little as £3 a month for the Faye razor with a 2 head blade, but there are three razor models available so you can choose the razor that suits your needs best.  It makes things very easy and you can stop or pause your subscription at any time, so it’s flexible too.

March Degustabox

April 8, 2016 by Erica Hughes Leave a Comment

crisps hamperA new Degustabox is always a cause for a bit of excitement.  I’m always intrigued to know what goodies we have got each month.  Our box was waiting for us when we got back from holiday and I was very happy to see that our morning breakfast was catered for with Pains au Chocolat from Brioche Pasquier (we buy quite a few of their products and these were as good as we expected) plus Weetabix On The Go (with extra protein) for a quick breakfast (and a little longer in bed to recover from the jet lag). We didn’t have to worry about being out of milk either because we had some Good Hemp Original, which is a dairy free alternative to milk.

There were some tasty snacks too.  Metcalfe’s skinny popcorn is giving us a chance to have a guilt free snack at 93 calories per portion – we have a few pounds to lose after 2 weeks in Florida.  The sweetness in Metcalfe’s comes from natural stevia leaf extract.  Hubby made a bee line for the Pipers Crisps: it seems he’s come across their tasty crisps before. Keeping healthy doesn’t have to mean dull and boring taste sensations as Kallow Quinoa and Seeds Multigrain Cakes and their Milk Chocolate Rice Cake Rounds proved. With a taste of the Mediterranean we like the Karyatis Meze To Go which is a hand snack for lunch boxes and picnics. Parle make some lovely biscuits and their Hide & Seek product was new to me, but very delicious. I love stuffing as an addition to a roast dinner, but it’s sometimes a bit too much trouble to make my own.  Kent’s Kitchen have the answer though as their tasty stuffings are easy to make up with water and just need baking.  Chewitts are a great sweet to have in your pocket to keep you going between meals and I’ve found they are very popular when you offer them around too.

We’d missed out on Easter a little by being away so it was a lovely touch to have a delicious Lindt White Chocolate Gold Bunny to enjoy on our return.

Joe Browns #JBColourful

April 6, 2016 by Erica Hughes 10 Comments

#JBColourful joe brownsI love to wear prints and I’m always on the look out for some nice ones, so I knew when Joe Browns got in touch that I’d like to try something with a bold pattern. We’ve just been away to sunny Florida and I’ve loved having the chance to try out some of Joe Browns bright and colourful clothes, which seemed to so perfectly suit the vibe out there.  This dress is just the sort of print I like: bright and colourful.  Not only are the colours and the flowery print design really my sort of thing, but the cut is very flattering too especially around the bodice with its empire line style. I like having a little bit of coverage on the sleeves, even though my arms are quite toned because of my yoga.

This is the Tamarindo dress in bright and there’s a pastel version for those less bold with their print choice than me.  It packed really well (very impressed) and was crease free out of the suitcase, which is a big win as you can wear it on your first evening on holiday if you like without worrying about crinkles.I think it’s really good value too at £34.95.

February Degustabox

March 15, 2016 by Erica Hughes 11 Comments

hartleys jelliesOur latest box of goodies arrived the other week from Degustabox and they have been very popular.  Hubby is on a diet at the moment and the Hartley’s 10 Cal jelly pots were just the thing for him.  He also liked the Fruit in Jelly pots as they were also diet friendly.  Another product receiving the low cal thumbs up was Db’s Discoveries Nothing But range.  They are healthy, freeze-dried fruit and vegetable snacks and they are all under 80 calories. Continuing on the healthy theme I have been eating Nutribix Gold and Grains in the mornings as my cereal. it tastes a bit like Weetabix, but it’s got interesting and tasty things added like coconut, honey and sorghum.  I think for me it’s still a bit too much like Weetabix to be my cereal of choice, but it’s made a pleasant change.  Beloved Dates bars are 100% natural and have no added sugar.  They are very nice and full of lots of healthy goodies.

february foodie treatsContinuing with the snacks, we’ve enjoyed Ritz Crisp and Thin which are a new oven-baked potato snack and they are very moreish.  The London Crisp Company have some great tasting crisp and the sea salt and malt vinegar flavour has been a hit.  On the subject of vinegar we were pleased to see Sarsons Malt Vinegar in there.  This is a new limited edition bottle featuring the ‘Fish and Chip’ characters created by artist Paul Thurlby. On a sweeter note, Mr Kipling’s Exceeding Good Slices lived up to their name with tasty ingredients like dark chocolate chips and coconut.  Diving chocolate was simply divine.  I have a bit of a soft spot for caramel and their Caramel bars were wonderful.

On the drinks side we’ve tried VitHit which is a juice based soft drink with 1000% of the recommended daily allowance of 8 different vitamins.  Good for the teeth and the waistline too as there is no added sugar and there are fewer than 35 calories in a bottle.J2O have developed a Spritz range which is just the refreshing drink for the summer ahead.  This would be a nice drink to serve to non-drinkers or drivers when others are having something fizzy.

Kitchen Design – How to Get It Right

March 7, 2016 by Erica Hughes 1 Comment

In 2014 we redesigned our kitchen and made our dreams a reality. We’d been saving up for this part of our home renovation and refurbishment for a few years and we were keen to get our kitchen design right. We’d previously had a kitchen refitted at our old house and we’d picked up a few pointers along the way, so we tried to use what worked well and change what didn’t.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAGet Plenty of Ideas

Even if you have a good image in your head of what you want go out and see as many kitchens as possible. Look in magazines, online and get the opinions of friends. We got a few firms to draw up plans for us before settling on our final version of our layout. Kitchen design is changing and there are always new ideas and improvements out there to consider.

Consider Current and Future Needs

A kitchen is a room that is too expensive to refit very often. Consider your current storage needs and try to add in a bit of scope for the future if your space allows. If your children are small, mind they are likely to have bigger appetites at teens for example, and you will need to be able to store more food.  I’d say go for more cupboard space than you think you need rather than less.  It’s unlikely that you will regret that extra space.

Get a Designer to Come Round to Your House

Some kitchen suppliers are reluctant to send someone round in the early stages of a working on a kitchen design, if at all because it takes up a lot of staff time. We found it very useful to have an expert on the ground in our house looking at our room shape, window placement, sunlight, etc. and making recommendations.  For us it was a key thing and the difference between using a kitchen company and going elsewhere.  If you have a few kitchen designers round, you’re likely to get some different ideas and you can look to incorporate them into your final design.

Get a Reliable Firm to Fit Your Kitchen

We were lucky here as we knew we were likely to go with the company that did our previous kitchen. They had done a good job the previous time and had a good range of products to offer. Another way to source a good kitchen firm is to ask for recommendations from other local people.  As we were returning customers we even got a discount on the price which came in useful.  We also went with the builders and the structural engineer that they recommended and the whole process was very seamless.  It might have cost a little more to use all their people, but we didn’t have to get involved with scheduling and the interplay between the various trades.  Doing a kitchen up is stressful enough and you need to cut down the potential stresses and strains when you can.

Mother’s Day Wishlist

March 2, 2016 by Erica Hughes 12 Comments

Are you still looking around for presents for Mother’s Day?  If so, I’ve got a few last-minute suggestions for you.

summer pjsNew PJs are always such a treat.  I love to have a new pair at Christmas, but a lighter pair for the spring and summer to come seems like perfect timing for Mother’s Day.  I’d not thought of Jockey for anything apart from underwear before, but they do other ranges including a very nice pyjama range.  This short pyjama (available soon) just screams summer and that’s what we want to think about at this time of year.  Perfect if you are planning an Easter break away in the sun.

Footcare setA little pampering is always welcome, so a foot care set like this one from Baylis & Harding.  The whole point of Mothering Sunday is to put your feet up, if you are a mum, so why not pamper them while you are at it.

notebookI love a nice notebook and there’s something special about writing in them.  I’m loving these notebooks from Fabriano Boutique with their Lokta paper covers.  Lokta is a handmade paper made by the fibrous inner bark of a bush that grows in the Himalayas. The manufacture of paper takes place in Kathmandu city where a small women’s cooperative mix simple technology and ancient skills.  All the covers are silk screen printed and the pages are hand bound using threads.

Hotter Shoes AccessoriesA new purse is a bit of a treat for me.  My credit card wallet is falling apart and I really need to find something robust to replace it, but I’d like it to be some pleasing to the eye too.  This purse from Hotter has lovely clean lines, but is very practical too.

The New Miller & Carter on Hagley Road

February 29, 2016 by Erica Hughes 16 Comments

Miller and Carter steakI’ve been a bit of a Miller & Carter fan since my visit to the Mailbox branch last year. So I was delighted to be invited along to sample the food at the newly opened Miller & Carter on Hagley Road.  We went along for a preview evening which mean that we could try out a wide range of dishes from the menu and we got a chance to talk to the staff about what its meant to change from a Harvester to a Miller & Carter.  Plus, there was a demonstration from a master butcher showing us exactly which bits of the animal are used for the steaks Miller & Carter use and what is discarded (but, obviously used elsewhere).

steak selection for miller & carterWe watched the master butcher deal with a side of beef in front of our eyes.  I think it’s always interesting to watch a master craftsman at work and find out about his trade.  In this case we saw him trimming off and selecting the best cuts.  Miller & Carter have a reputation for quality steaks and it’s easy to see why when you see how choosy they are about which bits are taken from the animal for their restaurants.

M&B staffI loved how friendly and enthusiastic the staff were about the change from being a Harvester to a Miller & Carter.  They were all really up for it and it was clear that the M&B group (to which both restaurant chains belong), did a good job of looking after the staff through the change over.  They were given quite a few weeks of training including the chance to try everything off the menu (which sounds a very tempting prospect).  The staff couldn’t do enough for us and we felt properly looked after during the evening.

dessert miller & carterObviously steaks are the speciality, but there are plenty of other things to like.  We love the Onion Loaf that comes with the steaks and the Lemongrass and Chilli Tempura King Prawns were to die for.   Puddings were lovely too: the Lemon Tart was delicious and I think that would be my pick on a return visit, but the Creme Brûlée came a very close second. Miller & Carter is more expensive than a mass market steak house, but the quality shines through and we’ll certainly be back to celebrate birthdays or for a date night out.

Men’s Footwear

February 22, 2016 by Erica Hughes Leave a Comment

At this time of the year we are thinking about getting outside more as the days become longer and hopefully the weather becomes better.  After a winter inside sheltering from the rain it’s good to blow away the cobwebs and get out in the fresh, spring air. It’s a long way to the days of summer though, so practical footwear is a must, but it doesn’t need to be dull and boring.  A little looking around the shops can unveil some very stylish boots and shoes.  My husband needs some new boots this season so I’ve been looking around to see what is available and there’s quite a selection at MandM Direct.

caterpillar boots mensI’m really loving the rugged, good looks of MandM Direct’s selection of Caterpillar boots with their chunky, reliable soles and their seam detailing, sometimes double, sometimes triple stitched.  They are perfect for dealing with muddy paths, puddles and anything that the weather chooses to throw at them.  They shout quality and they look stylish too.  They are reasonably priced, but there are cheaper equivalents available if you aren’t fussed about having a brand name, like the good value Firetrap range.  So it’s worth having a browse through to see what would suit you or your man.

Maybe you’d prefer to pick out something even more practical and go for one of the goretex boots on offer.  These will keep your feet dry through the April showers and are prefect for those spring walks in the countryside.  As well as being able to cope with bad weather and all terrains, they look good too, so you could easily wear them around town.  They don’t have that too heavy or clompy look that you sometimes get with walking boots. Again there’s a mix of options available including top brands like Karrimor as well as less well known names.

A Trip to the Spring Fair

February 12, 2016 by Erica Hughes 13 Comments

This year for the first time I went to the Spring Fair at the NEC.  It’s an enormous event and it’s impossible to get round all of it in one day.  It is a great place to look at the latest products and the trends for the year ahead.  One of my focuses was on kitchenwares and tablewares.

egg racksThere were some lovely things.  I love these egg racks.  They’d look wonderful in my kitchen, although I think I’d feel the need to keep them full to get the overall effect.

things to see at spring fair necThe Spring Fair is a trade show which is for buyers to decide what they would like to stock for the coming seasons.  I was there in a press capacity, but most people attending are buying for shops.  You can’t just go and buy stuff off the stands to take home.

tableware at spring showIt was good to get an idea of what will be available in the shops soon.  Some of the ranges are very new and the Spring Fair is the perfect way to get a sneak preview.

saucepansThere are also some very practical, but still beautiful, pieces of kitchen kit available and I’m wondering if I can justify ‘investing’ in some of them.

Later in the year there’s the Autumn Fair, which will have the latest things for the new season.  Tickets are free to trade customers.
