Choosing A Fridge Freezer

January 30, 2015 by Erica Hughes 5 Comments

fridge freezersIt won’t have escaped your notice that we have been refurbing our kitchen recently.  It was a very big job and whilst the major work was done all at one time, we didn’t really think about appliances (apart from leaving spaces for them) till afterwards as the dust was settling.  Part of that was budgeting, but a lot of it was that there were so many decisions to make that we chose not to make them all at once.  That meant that we were able to shop around and research our appliances in a bit more depth rather than rushing into decisions because of deadlines.  It helped too that we were going for free-standing appliances rather than built-in ones, as we felt that was more flexible.

A key part of the look of your kitchen is your fridge or your freezer.  We had a look at quite a range of fridge freezers going around many a retail shop and out-of-town warehouse to see a good selection of appliances and find a good deal.  I think it’s important to understand what you want from a fridge freezer before you start shopping and points to consider include:

  • Do you want the same size fridge and freezer space?  Would you prefer a bigger fridge or a bigger freezer?
  • How big a fridge freezer can you fit in your kitchen?  How much food storage place will you need? Think about the future too – will you need more in the foreseeable future?
  • Do you want your fridge at the top?  Or the bottom?  Or do you want your fridge and freezer to stand side by side each other, with each extending vertically?
  • Do you want a drinks dispenser?  Ice maker?  Any other features?
  • Consider energy efficiency.  Fuel bills are high these days, so it can save you money to have an energy-efficient fridge freezer.

Tesco finest Free From Cookies

January 27, 2015 by Erica Hughes 2 Comments

Tesco finest free fromIf you have to eat a gluten-free diet for health reasons, you’ve probably sadly used to having to make your own biscuits and cakes.  When I’m going round to a friend’s for coffee, I often take a packet of nice biscuits with me.  I’ve found this difficult to do with friends on a gluten-free diet and that’s left me feeling a bit mean, but I don’t always have time to bake and I’m not clued up on all the different sorts of flour.  So I was interested to hear about Tesco finest’s range of Free From products.

As you’d expect from a product from the finest range, it uses the best ingredients to create something tasty and a little bit special. I took a pack of the Triple Chocolate Cookies and one of the Dark Chocolate and Stem Ginger Cookies around to a celiac friend’s house to put them through their paces.  I couldn’t really tell the difference between these biscuits and similar quality cookies containing gluten.  They certainly provided the little bit of luxury that I was looking for and my friend was glad to be able to enjoy a sweet treat, which tasted good.

Heartsease Farm Sparkling Pressés Review and Giveaway

January 21, 2015 by Erica Hughes 235 Comments

heartsease farm british blackcurrant crushJanuary is a month for taking stock; for slimming down; for improving your health; and new year’s resolutions generally.  Many people cut down on the alcohol in January whether it’s because they have overindulged at Christmas or perhaps because they want to slim down or get healthier.  Whatever the reason there’s no need to do without the odd treat and I’ve been enjoying cutting down because I’ve had these lovely Heartsease Farm Sparkling Pressés to try out in the evening, instead of a glass of wine.

My personal favourite is the dark, almost red wine like in colour, British Blackcurrant Crush.  It’s a sparkling tipple made with carbonated spring water and blackcurrant juice.  It’s a really fresh, fruity taste, but it also has a depth of flavour. Bubbles always help make a drink seem a bit special and here that really helps the Heartsease Farm Sparkling Pressés seem like a party drink.  I also like the fact that the sparkling pressés are made and bottled at source in the Welsh Marches, a lovely part of the world.

There are six flavours in total to choose from:Elderflower Pressè, Traditional Lemonade, St Clements Pressè, Fiery Ginger Beer, Raspberry Lemonade and British Blackcurrant Crush.

A Little Luxury For Me has 6 bottles to giveaway to one lucky reader. Enter via the Gleam widget below.

Engineered Wood Floors

January 8, 2015 by Erica Hughes 2 Comments

engineered wood flooringFlooring is so important to a room: it sets the tone; it provides colour and texture; and of course, it acts as a foil for everything else.  To my mind choosing the right flooring is crucial to achieving the look that you want.  Just as important though is the texture and feel of the product, because often we are in direct contact with the floor through our feet.  We all know what it’s like to step on cold, hard tiles on a chilly, wintry morning – I can just imagine that shock of that running through me.  How much nicer to step on something that is natural and warm: wood.

Engineered oak flooring is designed to be tough and durable enough to withstand many years of use without warping or shrinking.  Consisting of a top layer of solid wood with multiple layers of plywood tightly compact together, each engineered wood plank much more stability than solid wood flooring.    This greater stability is what prevents it from warping or shrinking. Once the flooring is down you can’t tell the difference between engineered wood flooring and solid wood flooring.  So you get the look of solid wood with the strength of engineered wood, which has got to be good and it’s a great hard wearing and cost-effective choice if you are looking for alternatives to solid wood flooring.

Due to its layered construction an engineered wood floor is more stable and may not be as affected by changes in the surrounding environment as other flooring products. This dimensional stability means that there’s less need to allow for seasonal movement when installing, so there’s a reduced acclimatization period and this allows most engineered floors to be fitted above underfloor heating.  In fact, an engineered wood floor combined with underfloor heating sounds like the perfect combination and a way of bringing a little everyday luxury into your life.

Cooks Lane Herbs

January 7, 2015 by Erica Hughes 12 Comments

Cooks Lane Herbs farmers market stallMy husband’s brother and his wife run their own herb nursery called Cooks Lane Herbs.  Their Leicester based nursery produces up to 60 species of herbs. Of those herbs, some of which are sold as plants at local sales.  But others are made into their growing range of soaps, creams and bath salts. They grow the herbs in their garden and also on their allotment.

I love to treat myself to a long soak in the bath after a hard day. So their range of bath salts are a very welcome addition to my tub.  They use a blend of natural sea salt and epsom salts.  To this mix they add a range of their home-grown herbs to create tempting concoctions, like their rose geranium bath salts. This week I’ve been trying out their calendula and milk bath powder.  Firstly you sprinkle this mildly-fizzy bath powder in to create a velvety smooth bath water.  Secondly you know, as you step in, that it’s enriched with soothing calendula, rich, smooth cocoa butter and milk.  The scent is divine and you feel cocooned in luxury with pretty calendula petals floating around you as you bathe.

A bar of luxury soap can bring a little pampering into every day life.  Cooks Lane Herbs offer a wide range of herbal soap combinations and there is something in their range to suit everybody.  I love the sound of red clover and honey.  And who could resist druid’s rest, a soap made with vervain. Vervain is a herb sacred to the druids for its power to calm and protect.  All soaps made by Cooks Lane Herbs use a blend of plant oils (no palm oil), including Welland Valley Rapeseed Oil from Leicestershire. Also, they use natural colourings, such as annatto seed and rosehip powder, essential oils and dried herbs.  As you might expect, none of their products or ingredients are tested on animals. In fact, all of them (except lip balms, which contain beeswax) are suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Claire Hutchings at Kitchen School

December 23, 2014 by Erica Hughes 1 Comment

claire hutchings

Claire Hutchings preparing sobrassada for canapes

In 2011 Clare Hutchings was one of the Masterchef: The Professionals finalists.  In February 2013 we went to sample Claire’s food in a pop up restaurant in Birmingham. It was excellent and we wanted to have to opportunity to taste her food again.  Since then Claire has been working at the Michelin-starred Zaranda restaurant, at the 5-star Castell Son Claret hotel, as an assistant to award-winning chef Fernando Pérez Arellano.  This time we went to the Kitchen School to one of their supper clubs with Claire stepping in to act as chef for the evening.

Spanish influences were apparent as we sampled the canapes in the kitchen before the meal.  The use of Majorcan ingredients like sobrassada brought a hint of Spain to the evening and hinted at what Claire had learnt in Majorca.  We couldn’t stop snacking on the very moreish parsnip crisps served with a smoked dip. My personal favourite of the canapes were the truffled arancini balls which were a delight and my husband loved the beetroot macaroons with horseradish cream which were a highlight for him last time we tasted Claire’s food too.

scallop with apple

Roasted Scallop with Almond, Apple, Garlic and Sweet Onion Puree

Roasted scallop with almond, apple, garlic and sweet onion puree was the first of the sit down courses that we were served.  It looked wonderful with a roasted scallop on its bed of chopped apple, crowned with a lettuce garnish and almonds and puree artfully scattered over the plate. The diced apple and the almonds made the perfect partners to complement the meaty, juicy scallop. As you’d expect from a chef’s of Claire’s standard, the scallops were cooked to perfection with a nicely brown exterior achieved without overcooking the inside of the shellfish.  With contrasting freshness of the apple this dish was light and refreshing.

crispy chicken by Claire Hutchings

Crispy Chicken with Salt Baked Celeriac, Hazelnut and Burnt Pear

The next course was crispy chicken with salt baked celeriac, hazelnut and burnt pear.  The crispy chicken was pure concentrated chicken flavour and was nicely complemented by the depth of flavour of the celeriac and pear.  Next up was one of the star dishes of the evening: BBQ ox.  Chatting to Claire before the meal we’d learnt that 5 processes go into making the BBQ sauce, which showed in the depth and complexity of the smokey flavours as the meat had a very punchy flavour.  Claire commented that one of the things she’d learnt in restaurant where she currently works, is that less is more.  Less on the plate, but doing more with that food to enhance and bring out the flavours of the dish.  It’s a lesson she’s learnt well.

sorbet dessert

Mascapone with Basil, Strawberry and Red Wine Sorbet

Included in our evening was a demonstration of the pre-dessert: mascarpone with basil, strawberry and red wine sorbet. Claire made it all look very simple, but obviously time only allowed to show a few bits of the preparation of the dish.  Claire cooked the basil for just a few seconds in already boiling water before stopping the cooking and blending the mix.  This kept the bright green colour and fresh, herby flavour shining through.

The main dessert was chocolate with crispy bacon, salt caramel and vanilla ice cream. Salt and chocolate are a tried and tested combination, but that combination does need handling with care to make sure the balance is right. It was perfectly judged.  Using the bacon to provide some of that salty flavour was a great idea and the crisp bacon crumbs added an extra dimension to the dish.  A dessert that we will remember for a long time.

We’ll certainly be following Claire’s career in the future and hope to get to taste her food again before too long.  I’d love to see and taste her take on paella which for me is the dish that sums up Spanish cuisine.

Tesco finest Chilled Party Food

December 19, 2014 by Erica Hughes 1 Comment

Tesco finest chilled party foodAt this time of year there is just so much to do, so if you are having friends round this Christmas, you might want to buy in some party food to offer them. It’s nice though when you can buy good quality snacks and canapes to offer your guests because it makes you feel less guilty about not making your own.  Tesco finest have a wide range of chilled party food available this year and we have been enjoying trying some of it out.

Smoked salmon nibbles always go down well with me.  I love smoked salmon and Tesco finest Party Food Smoked Salmon Canapes are made with top quality Scottish oak and beech smoked salmon.  Resting on seeded thins, the salmon is perfectly complemented by the beetroot pearls.  I’m not a huge beetroot fan, but this is a winning combination of flavours as they work so well together.

I love the fact that Tesco have come up with some interesting and memorable options for party food this year.  I think we are all a bit bored with cocktail sausages and the like, so it’s good to get some really different ideas coming through.  If like us you like Asian food, I recommend the finest Bang Bang Chicken Skewers with Popping Candy with their tasty red Thai chicken skewered onto lemongrass spears.  They come with a thai satay dipping sauce and coconut popping candy.  Great fun!

bubble shotsAnother unusual option which I really love are these finest Party Food Bubble Shots.   Inspired by molecular gastronomy these shots consist of a spicy Virgin Mary cocktail (tomato, Worcestershire sauce, tabasco and dill) with pearls of sweet, juicy clementine jelly all served up in glass test tubes.  They look fantastic and will definitely break the ice with your guests.

If you are planning a summer garden party, you’ll have other considerations.  It’s good to get some hints and tips for a summer garden party.

A New Dishwasher

December 18, 2014 by Erica Hughes 1 Comment

packed dishwasher

My new dishwasher – sadly not installed yet

We have been living with our lovely new kitchen for a month or two now, but we have been a bit slow to buy our new appliances. It’s been a bit daft really as some of them will save me time like our new dishwasher. I have been without a dishwasher (one that works at least) for about 5 years I think. The one we had at the old house broke and we never got around to getting a new one. I think we felt a bit let down by it because whilst it was out of guarantee, it was still fairly new. We left it in place and it was handy to have it there when we were having people round to view the house when we were selling because it filled a gap and I could always hide some stuff inside it. When we moved we put it outside for the scrap men to collect. Then at the current house the dishwasher was left behind ‘for us’. We could not get it to work. It didn’t seem to be plumbed in properly and the pipework in that area was a nightmare. We left it in place (seeing a pattern here?) and put it out for the scrap man when we redid the kitchen. So at last we have got a new one and we have proper plumbing in place for it. Yay!

The change from hand washing up to machine washing up has made me think about saving energy. We have picked out an energy-efficient machine, but it’s been good to read up about things like energy-efficient cycles.  It seems a bit bizarre, but using an eco or auto dishwasher cycle could use less energy than short cycles, so it’s worth reading the manual to find out a bit more.  As we have a water meter, saving water is a concern too.  Could using a dishwasher really use less water than washing by hand?  I’ve been using this water saving tool to find out a bit more.  Apparently, my new dishwasher could save me up to 126 litres of water a week, which is a financial saving as well as being better for the environment.

Makeover Ideas for Small Backyards

December 17, 2014 by Erica Hughes 1 Comment

A small backyard doesn’t mean you are doomed to never entertain. There are plenty of ways to trick the eye into believing your small backyard is much larger than it appears. For a few simple ways to maximise your yard, check out these helpful ideas.

Bring in Some Patio Furniture

When space is at a premium, a smaller outdoor setting is your friend. You can also create the illusion of having more space with minimalist furnishings. Metal settings don’t have to be plain and boring. You can choose from brushed metal or polished materials, just look for a design that contrasts with your surroundings. For inspiration, check out Super A-Mart Australia . Choosing seating that has a slim profile will take up less space in your yard, making it appear bigger.

Add Hanging Pots

Just because you are trying to maximise your outdoor space doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite plants. Instead, invest in some hanging pots and some hooks to hang them from. Hanging pots free up the space at your feet, as well as giving the plants more access to light. And don’t feel that you have to hang your new pots from the roof – you can attach them to your fencing, handrails on stairs, or even to a wall. If you aren’t ready to commit to drilling holes in a surface like brick, attach some pots to lattice and secure the lattice in an area of the yard that could do with some cover. Fill your new pots with colourful flowers or herbs.

Work in Some Pretty Lights

Lights are a simple way to add colour without going overboard. A few strings of fairy lights overhead turns any backyard into a beautiful spot to relax. That little splash of light is ideal for outdoor dinners in warm weather. If fairy lights aren’t suitable, add some solar lanterns to the edges of your garden bed or around the pathway. They instantly perk up the outdoors and are inexpensive to buy.

Clear Out & Open Up

If your yard is swamped by large growth, trim it back. You will have more natural light, which automatically makes the space bigger. Also avoid the temptation to add a pergola or awning to your backyard. Any structure that stretches overhead will not only cut your natural light out, but will also close the space in and immediately make it feel smaller. Keeping trees and shrubs trimmed back also makes your yard appear instantly tidier.

Bring in Some Pot Plants

The best way to bring in plants without compromising a lot of space is by using tall planters. Tall planters are available in a variety of styles and materials, from brushed silver to rich clay. If you have the space, a pair of tall planters by your doorway, or at the beginning of any path adds symmetry to the overall look. You can then add some fragrance by planting a herb such as lemongrass, or some colour by planting succulents. Add some coloured pebbles around the base of the plant for a mix of texture.

Are you ready to start making over your backyard? What ideas have you had for maximising your yard space?
