Vitamin C Serum

March 5, 2015 by Erica Hughes 6 Comments

Instanatural Advanced Formular Vitamin C SerumOver the last couple of weeks I’ve been trying out this Vitamin C Serum from Instanatural.  It comes in a neat blue bottle with a stopper.  The consistency of the serum is such that using the dropper is easy, it’s neither too liquidy or too gluppy.  It has a bright orange colour and I detected a fruity scent.  When you put it on, you feel that your face should feel sticky because you are putting something that looks like thick orange juice on your skin.  It doesn’t though, it’s very pleasant to use and apply.

The formula includes organic and natural ingredients such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin E. It also includes ingredients such as organic rosehip oil, Sea Buckthorn Oil, Organic Argan Oil, Plant Stem Cells, Carrot Seed Oil, Pomegranate which have a reputation for fighting off the signs of ageing.

It’s easy to apply and provides instant hydration to your skin and goes on smoothly to provide soothing relief and moisture. I liked the effect on my skin, but, maybe because it was absorbed so quickly, it didn’t feel as hydrated after a few hours.  That said, my skin didn’t feel tight or dry at all during the day, so it may just be a more subtle action that thicker creams.

I received this product in exchange for an honest review.

Sunbites

March 3, 2015 by Erica Hughes 22 Comments

sunbites snacksIt’s nice to try something out in the snack line that’s a little bit different from the norm.  There are a lot of snacks out there that are very similar, so it’s nice to have a change.  We have been trialing Sunbites, a multigrain snack from Walkers.  There are 3 new additions to the range and we have been munching away on them.

Crispy Crackers

Crispy Crackers are a baked snack, which helps keep the fat content to 30% less than regular crisps.  There’s no need to compromise on taste though and the sunripened sweet chilli flavour is a bold, flavourful one to try.  Other flavours are available and you can take your pick from cream cheese and chive, lightly salted and oven roasted onion & rosemary.

Pitta Bakes

These are as the name suggests based on pitta bread.  Again it’s a baked snack and the texture is more like a tortilla chip than a standard crisp.  We tried the vintage cheddar & caramelised onion flavour, which was a tasty treat.  There’s also roasted red pepper & chili, plus oven roasted onion & rosemary to choose from.

Crackers and Dip Packs

A tasty innovation for the range is the crackers and dips packs. You get a little pot of chutney to dip the crackers in. The crackers are tasty enough to stand up as a snack in their own right, but better still with the chutney dip.  The amount of dip is generous too and we found we had some to spare. Again there are a few flavours available: caramelised red onion chutney with lightly salted crackers or sundried tomato and roasted red pepper salsa with lightly salted crackers.

I think that these snacks will be regulars in lunch boxes in our household as they are tasty and healthier than the average crisp.

InstaNatural Hyaluronic Acid Serum

February 24, 2015 by Erica Hughes 4 Comments

InstaNatural Hyaluronic Acid SerumOver the last few weeks I’ve been trying out InstaNatural Hyaluronic Acid Serum.  My routine has been to use it each morning after cleansing my face and before putting on my moisturiser.

It’s an anti-ageing serum that packs quite a punch.  Here are the details of the active ingredients:

  •  A professional formula of anti-aging ingredients,  such as Vitamin C, Green Tea, Jojoba Oil, and other antioxidants, to rejuvenate your skin to give you healthy, more youthful appearance.
  •  Made with a blend of natural and organic ingredients. There are no parabens, fragrances, additives or alcohol.  It’s also suitable for vegans.
  • The Hyaluronic Acid Serum has been developed to deliver immediate moisture and nourishment to the skin, creating a more youthful and vibrant look with a softer feel and leaving you with a radiant and glowing complexion.
  •  Formulated to plump up the skin, fill in fine lines and wrinkles, reduce the appearance of dark circles and decrease puffiness under the eyes.

It’s a really easy product to use.  I found it went on very easily and was quickly absorbed.  I did find it was a bit difficult to use the dropper at times as the serum is so thick.  This wasn’t really a problem though as I used the dropper like a stick to get the serum out.  It left my skin feeling wonderful.  I tend to cleanse my face two hours before I get ready to leave the house, so this was the only product on my skin during this time each morning.  I was impressed by how hydrated my skin felt.

Living Room Makeover Ideas for Less

February 19, 2015 by Erica Hughes 3 Comments

Is your living room looking a bit bland or cluttered? Is it going unused? Would you like to make it a bit more inviting but you don’t have a lot of cash to spend on it? It’s actually a lot easier to liven up a room on very little money than you might think. Here’s how.

Suites

living room makeover ideas for lessChanging up the furniture in the room can be a good place to start. If your old lounges are falling apart, consider replacing them with something more modern. Begin by investigating leather couches and lounge suites from a specialist outlet like Super Amart and weigh your options from there. Have a style for the room in mind before you go shopping and do a bit of research online.

Light

Light is another way to change up your living room. This is something not a lot of people think about because people don’t want glare on their TV screens but, if you go about it the right way, you can avoid that entirely. Casting the right light in the room will make it feel larger and airier without making it hard to catch up on your favourite shows. You can accomplish this through placement of lamps for the evenings and thinner curtains over the windows during the day to let natural light in.

Personality

Another way to give your living room a makeover is to start inserting a few personal touches. Have some fun with patterns. You can get new covers for your lounges that will give them some charm – the same goes for cushions. What about the walls? Open the room up further with a mirror or maybe some decorations – art, a shelf to hold a small plant, a framed poster of your favourite film… whatever you like! Don’t be afraid to add more you; this is your home, after all.

Create a Space

You could even consider changing part of the room into something else entirely. Create a reading nook near a window with a comfy chair and a bookcase, or invent a new miniature home office area with a large open-front cupboard acting as a desk and a comfortable chair in place of the traditional desk chair.

living roomFlooring

The floor is another area that gets overlooked an awful lot and it’s an area that’s so easy to spruce up! All you need to add is an eye-catching rug. That’s it! Find a nice shape, size and style that doesn’t break your budget or the room’s aesthetic and throw it in there. Rugs, if chosen properly, can become the focal point of any room they’re placed in. You’d be surprised how much of a difference they can make and they’ll protect your carpet too!

Giving your living room a makeover seems like a really expensive project but, if you’re thrifty and plan ahead, it doesn’t have to be at all. Work with what you’ve got and make it work as best you can before you start branching out into more expensive territory. What are your favourite living room makeover tips? Marley Spoon

February 11, 2015 by Erica Hughes 5 Comments

Meal pack from Marley SpoonMarley Spoon is a bespoke recipe kit delivery service that launched in the UK in December. Each week, there are seven new dishes to choose from, created by a team of professional chefs. Marley Spoon have also created a special Valentine’s Day kit (starting at £26) so that you can impress your loved ones with a home-cooked meal. The kit even comes complete with rose petals to decorate!

I was surprised by the range of recipes available and it’s  amazing to think that this will change each week.  Many of the recipes are globally inspired and use ingredients that might not be that easy to source if you were buying in your local supermarket.  It’s very easy to order and you get your kit delivered by courier.  They make sure it’s kept nice and cool during the delivery process and my food was still cold to the touch when it was received.

We tried the glazed salmon with wasabi peanut potatoes and bok choi.

I cooked the Devonshire pork nasi goreng.  What I particularly liked about this dish is that it gave me the chance to try out new ingredients like ketjap manis and mirin without having to source a supplier and buy a big bottle of something that I might not use again.  It really was delicious and we will probably make this again if we can find the things we need to make it.  If there is a downside, it is a bit pricey at £9 per meal, but the packs are carefully put together and good quality ingredients are used.  There is quite a lot of packaging involved too, but a lot of it is recyclable and the insulation used to keep the food cold in transit is compostable. Marley Spoon is well worth considering for a special home cooked meal or just for trying out something new and different.

Hotter Trainers

February 10, 2015 by Erica Hughes 7 Comments

star trainers from Hotter shoesHotter Shoes asked me to put their Star trainers through their paces.  I picked out these red ones because I love red and I think they look great too.  Over the last few weeks I’ve been wearing them on the school run; at the shoes; going to my yoga class; etc. They’ve had a lot of positive comments and people have been asking me where they came from.

They are really comfortable to wear and unlike some trainers they have plenty of padding on the soles to stop you feeling every stone.  This is thanks to its deep PU sole, which filled with millions of tiny air bubbles, so these Hotter trainers offer a lot of natural bounce and shock absorbance.  I like the fact that they come in half sizes too, as that makes it much easier to get a good fit for your feet.

Extra padding to both the heel and tongue brings added support and comfort, while the lace fastening allows for an adjustable fit. Plus there are cushioned, removable insoles to help keep your feet feeling fresh all day.  These are a great practical choice for day to day life and it’s great that you don’t have to compromise comfort for style.

Happy First Birthday to the Balcony

February 5, 2015 by Erica Hughes 2 Comments

The BalconyLast year we went to The Balcony, which is situated on L4 of Selfridges, The Bullring, for a tasting evening following their launch.  Last week they hosted a first birthday party after achieving excellent results in its first year of trading.  The restaurant, operated by prestigious caterers, Searcys, invited us along to enjoy cocktails, wine, canapés and live music.

Alice Weryk general manager at The Balcony, comments, “We’re very pleased with what has been a fantastic year for us. We’ve really strived to provide our customers with something a bit different, serving food and drinks with a playful twist in a stylish and contemporary environment. We believe the success of the restaurant is owed in large part to our varied offering – we open at 10am right through to 8pm, with customers able to choose from brunch, our famed afternoon tea picnic, sharing platters, main dishes, cocktails and Champagne.”

As ever the quality of the food, and the drinks, at The Balcony were of a very high standard. I love the fact that their take on food has a sense of fun and there’s a real dash of originality running through what they offer.  The surroundings are a lovely complement to the food and there are great views of the Bull Ring.  I think this is the first of many more successful birthdays for The Balcony.

Lasan: A Review

February 4, 2015 by Erica Hughes 6 Comments

LasanLast week we were asked to review Lasan.  You might have heard of the restaurant before because they won Britain’s Best Local Restaurant on Gordon Ramsay’s F Word in 2010.  Since then they haven’t sat on their laurels and have won other awards like the Asian Business Restaurant of the Year 2013.  We’d never been though and were keen to try it out and see if we agreed with the judges about the quality of food on offer.

lasan jewellery quarter birminghamWhen we arrived we were offered the chance of eating from the À la carte selection or opting for the taster menu.  As it was my husband’s birthday later in the week, we decided to go for the taster menu with the matching wine flight. Within the taster menu there are 8 courses (including an amuse-bouche) and 6 matching wines (the first 4 courses have the wines matched to them in pairs).  This was priced at £49.95 per person for the food and £24.95 per person for the wine.  Some of the cost was covered by Lasan, but we wanted to treat ourselves to the full experience.

We started with an amuse-bouche of North Indian broth made of reduced lamb stock, black cardamom and cream. There was a richness and a complexity to the soup, which you seldom get to enjoy and it made the perfect opening for the dishes to come.

smoked duck samosaOur first proper course was the Samosa: Smoked duck bound with smooth aubergine caviar, spiced with ginger and ground raw mango, sweet tamarind chutney and cucumber. This was a gorgeous parcel of loveliness made with a very flaky pastry.  The flavours of the smoked duck were complemented by the lovely chutney and it was a delight to eat.  I think the only thing I would say as a negative was that the samosa was very small and I would have liked a little more, just to fully appreciate it you understand (but of course this is just one of many courses).

The next course was Kekda: Soft shell crab dipped in a crispy ajwain and Kashmiri chilli batter.  Devonshire crab, green pea and potato cake, tomato and sour raw chutney.  This dish had a lovely balance of flavours between the sweet and the sour, plus there were lots of different textures which complemented each other.  The soft shell crab was something new to me and I was keen to try it, but it wasn’t something that I found very memorable.  This dish was served with Albarino wine, which we first encountered near Barcelona.  This wine with its peachy, fresh taste complemented the sweet and sour flavours of the dish.

king prawnNext up was Sarson ki Jhinga: Tandoori fresh water king prawn from West Bengal marinated in mustard, turmeric and lemon.  Served with grapefruit, orange and fennel shoots. This was a very fresh and light dish.  There were some lovely flavours here which worked well with each other.

Nellore Chappa came next.  A pan-fried fillet of wild Cornish bass resting on slow cooked aubergine spiced with turmeric and green chilli, fenugreek scented coconut milk and tamarind sauce. The fish was perfectly cooked and came with a sauce which carefully balanced the coconut flavours with those of the tamarind.  It was served with the outstanding wine from the wine flight: Gewurztraminer Grand Cur, Biecher & Schaal.  I found the wine a revelation because I’d usually found this type of wine to be too sweet for my palette.  This was a sweet wine, but its complexity and subtlety raised it up.

NizamiOur next culinary experience was a new one to us.  We were served Haleem: Nizami a speciality from Hyderabad.  Mutton cooked slowly with peral barley and lentils.  Finished with ginger, fried onions and lime. The waiter explained to us that this dish comes from a hilly area of India and that it’s a regional speciality, usually served between the starter and main course.  This was a tasty, filling dish which I’d describe as a savoury, meaty pottage with spice.  It was perhaps a little rustic for a taster menu, but I can see that it’s not something you could easily serve on an À la carte menu and I like to try out authentic dishes.

Hiran AchariThe next course was the strongest one of the menu namely the  Hiran Achari: Slow braised haunch and pearl onion bhuna, tandoori spiced loin, Bengali sautéed chard and okra bhajee, pickled pumpkin puree.  Served with Mogul inspired smooth Achaar gravy spiced with traditional Indian pickling spices finally soured with dried raw mango.  This dish was at once very European and very Indian.  The venison haunch was succulent and cooked to perfection.  This part of the dish on its own was the European part and the natural flavours of the meat were picked out with delicate spices.  It was teamed up with bhuna which was a very refined version of the sort of meal that we are accustomed to getting in the average Indian restaurant.  All the ingredients were cooked to the highest standard and for both of us this was the stand out dish.

lasan jewellery quarter birminghamFor dessert we had the Bombay Mess which is a play on the classic Eton Mess: mango mousse, raspberry sorbet, berries, mango, pineapple and meringue, with a hint of cardamon and Thai basil.  This was the best dessert we’d ever had in an Indian restaurant.  It was a light and refreshing dessert which was the perfect end to the tasting menu.  All the elements were very good, but the sorbet was a particular favourite.  If I was going to criticise, I’d say that it could have been more of a cohesive whole, but as it was, there were a lot of lovely things which were all placed together.  Nothing jarred, but I felt it needed bringing together somehow.

Lasan is a lovely restaurant tucked away in a side street within Birmingham’s jewellery quarter.  The decor is fresh, modern and comfortable and there is a relaxed atmosphere.  Waiting staff are knowledgable and attentive.  I think we’ll be going back.
