Ah, British summer. It can be burning hot for a while. Then without warning, it gets cold and wet. The next day is so windy that you need to get a thick jumper out of storage. But the weather changes again, and you have to dig back your summer dress again. British summer is a constant surprise. You never quite know what you’re going to get, and that makes it all the more challenging.
So, if you’ve been keeping an eye on your garden in the hope of relaxing with a book in the sun, you may want to think again. However, just because the weather changes all the time doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the garden.

Build yourself a quiet and protected spot
When the weather shifts so rapidly, you want to build a spot that will be protected. A chair or a bench against a tree or a wall can be the ideal spot to let your thoughts flow and relax. Position the bench in such a way that you can sit comfortably. Sitting against a wall can offer plenty of protection when it’s cold and windy. Additionally, the wall soaks up the heat from the sun during the day. So it will still feel warm to the touch even when the temperature drops a little. Surprisingly, a cosy chair underneath or by a tree can also be a great idea. A tree will keep you in the shade when the temperature rises. The leaves also release moisture, keeping you cool when the sun is hot.
Create shade where you need it
We can still expect some hot days before the end of the summer. So, if you don’t have a protective tree to keep you cool, you want to look for decking solutions or even garden awnings by Caribbean Blinds. As tempting as it is to soak up the heat from the sun, staying in the shade will keep you protected from unexpected sunburns. Most people don’t realize that you can get a sunburn in less than 15 minutes between 10 AM and 4 PM. Additionally, even if you use sunscreen protection, direct and prolonged sun exposure on a hot day could be exhausting. You can enjoy the warmth safely in the shade.
Open your windows
On a windy or rainy day, enjoying the garden seems like an impossible dream. But, you can just as well keep your window open to ventilate your home. Letting the fresh air in will improve your indoor air. It also lets you enjoy the garden’s view, sounds and smells without being out in the rain. Your sensory experience of the garden is varied. You’ll be surprised to know that seeing, smelling, and hearing the sounds of your garden can have just as much a relaxing effect as walking in the middle of it.
Listen to your inner child
While there is no denying that a cosy patio and beautiful plants transform your garden, they may not be enough to convince you to spend time outdoors every day. Spending 20 to 30 minutes in the sun can do wonders for your mood and your immune system. But if you still need convincing to enjoy your garden, why not create a fun area? The addition of a trampoline can boost your mood, health and make the garden more exciting.
